Biography of
U Tayzawbatha, Bhodi Mandaing Monastery, Sanford, Florida
Sayadaw U Tayzawbatha was born on Saturday, December 16
1927 (the 1th Waning Moon of the month of Wakaung,
Myanmar Era 1289) of parents
U Yu and Daw Khin Htwe, Pharpon,
Myanmar. At the
age of 16, during the Japanese occupation, U Tayzawbatha became a novice at
A-pyaung Monastery in A-paung Village, Pharpon,
Myanmar under
the preceptor Sayadaw U Tayzawuntha. He completed his education in Vineya Pali
while he was a novice. With the support of his own parents, in1946 (the 8th
Waxing Moon of the month Tagu,
Myanmar Era
1308), he became a full-fledged monk at the Aung-Mye-Bob-Tha monastery with
Sayadaw Zawtika as preceptor.
He received his education at Government Primary School
in Pharpon. He had his religious education in Tipitaka at Aung-Mye-Bon-Tha
Monastery, Pharpon. After ordination he moved to Mandalay. He got the degree of
Dhamāmacāriya, Master of Dhamma, in 1948. Sayadaw also passed the
Master of Dhamma (Saccathiha) examination held by Pariyatti Sasanahita in the
same year. He served as a Pāli professor and Head of Department in Nyaung-Yann Pali
University, Mandalay.
He was one of the editors of the board to edit and to
compare the Ku-Tho-Daw (Mandalay)
stone writings with Hanthawadddy’s reproduced Tipitakas. He participated in the
sixth Sangha’s Convention. He also edited Mahāniddesa Pāli for Nyaug-Yann Pāli University.
Sayadaw was an author of many magazine articles publication (on Dhamma, Western
Religions, and on Vipassana meditation in New Light of Myanmar, and Mandalay
Hanthawaddy News paper.
The Progressive Buddhist Association of Azusa invited him
to U.S.A.
in May 16, 1989 and he served as an Abbot for four years. U Win Myint,
mathematic professor at the University
of Tennessee, was the founder of Buddhist Temple
in Nashville, Tennessee. U Win Myint invited Sayadaw to
spend one year (vasa) at the Buddhist
Temple and Sayadaw taught
Dhamma to Cambodian refugees.
Since coming to United
States in 1989, he has been teaching insight meditation,
Abhidhamma, and Discourses, in Canada,
California, Florida,
Ohio, Georgia,
Tennessee and
in Jamica. He founded the Bhodhi Mandaing Monastery in Sanford, Florida
and he is now the Chief Abbot of the new Bhodhi Mandaing Monastery.
He is also the spiritual advisor of the Buddhist Temple
in Jamaica
and taught Vipassana meditation in January of every year. Sayadaw taught
Vipassana meditation at TTVMC in November 5 to 14, 2003. He also taught
Vipassana meditation at Burma Buddhist Association, LaPuente, and at Illinois University,
Chicago, Ill.
